The Wilkinson lab aims to discover and investigate new RNA-based molecular machines, using chemical biology, bioinformatics, microbiology, molecular biology and cryo-electron microscopy. We are particularly interested in uncharacterized reverse transcriptase proteins in bacteria, many of which seem to be associated with phage defense by unknown mechanisms. We also explore the mechanisms of eukaryotic retrotransposons.
