Biological membranes define the boundary of cells and organelles. The Walz lab is interested in understanding mechanisms that underlie membrane-related processes, such as vesicular trafficking, membrane repair, and the regulation of membrane proteins by lipids and membrane characteristics. Our main approach is the use of single-particle cryo-electron microscopy to study the dynamics of the involved macromolecular machineries and membrane proteins in the context of lipid bilayers.
