Cells must maintain well-organized controlled fluxes of ions, nutrients and signaling molecules across lipid membrane. An array of specialized proteins, including membrane transporters, assists with these processes. The Boudker lab is interested in understanding the mechanism of transporters using a combination of structural, biophysical and protein engineering techniques. Our goal is not only to uncover how transporters work, but also to learn how to redesign them to acquire novel functions and improved stability.
