Training the Next Generation of Scientific Leaders
The Tri-Institutional PhD Program in Chemical Biology was established in 2001 as one of the first graduate programs in the world to focus on research and training at the interface of chemistry and biology. The program is a collaborative offering of three premier New York City institutions, Weill Cornell Medical College, The Rockefeller University, and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Located adjacent to one another in the heart of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, these three institutions combine to create an unique university environment and provide unparalleled scientific opportunities to the next generation of leaders in chemical biology.
TPCB students are actively engaged in forefront research, mentored by internationally-recognized faculty members, including eminent senior scientists and junior faculty rising stars. Students choose from a broad range of chemical biology research areas based on their skills and interests, from organic synthesis of bioactive small molecules, to mechanistic investigations of macromolecules, to dissection of cellular processes using chemical probes, to in vivo evaluation of novel therapeutics. Our biomedical research environment provides students with access to the full spectrum of fundamental to translational research. As a result of these exceptionally rich opportunities and the program’s emphasis on laboratory research, our students maintain an impressive publication record in leading scientific journals, with an average of five papers per graduate!
At TPCB, students will find outstanding resources for all phases of their training, including state-of-the-art research laboratories, core facilities, and collaborative research centers, as well as courses and seminars created specifically for TPCB students, access to additional courses at neighboring institutions in NYC, and opportunities to attend vibrant lecture series featuring world-class scientists. TPCB students organize and host the annual Tri-Institutional Chemical Biology Symposium, as well as the annual TPCB Student Career Development Retreat. The program is also supported by a prestigious NIH Chemistry–Biology Interface T32 Training Grant.
This competitive program attracts top students from around the world with diverse backgrounds and interests. The program has a strong, long-term commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in science, and our students have pioneered innovative programs in science outreach. Our students receive comprehensive career development training, which has enabled our graduates go onto successful scientific careers in academia, industry, and science policy, including faculty positions at leading universities, research positions in major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and a wide range of other scientific careers.
All TPCB students receive graduate fellowships that include a generous stipend, attractive subsidized housing close to campus, healthcare benefits, and an annual research allowance that enables travel to scientific conferences around the world. Because TPCB is centrally located in New York City, our students also enjoy everything that the city has to offer, including myriad cultural, dining, and entertainment opportunities.
